Rukmangadha

A king whose devotion Vishnu tested by sending him an apsara. Rukmangadha fell in love and promised never to refuse her a wish.

On Ekadashi she asked Rukmangadha not to worship Vishnu but be with her, reminding him of his promise, from which she would only free him if he killed his only son, Dharmangada. For Rukmangadha the observance of Ekadashi was more important than his son’s life. As he took his sword in hand, Vishnu appeared and revealed that it was all just a test.

Dharmangada was crowned king and Vishnu took Rukmangadha and his wife Sandhyavali with him to his kingdom, Vaikuntha.
