Mother India – Bharat is the ancient name of India – is the personification of India as mother-deity, shown as a woman in a red sari, sitting on a lion, a flag in her hand.
Glory to Mother Bharat, the ocean washes her feet, the mighty Himalayas are her crown, she is lavishly adorned with the jewels of the seers and sages.
Her head is surrounded by a halo, in her four hands she holds a book, prayer beads, cloth and rice plants – symbolizing knowledge, religion, clothing and food.
In 1937 Gandhi inaugurated the first Mata Bharat Temple in Varanasi.
A hymn to Bharat Mata is Bharat Vande Mataram
