Hanuman (Color)

Hanuman is always depicted in red or dark orange.

Sindur, the red powder of cinnabar, is worn by married women on the forehead or at the base of the hair. Sindur stands for a good partnership (Saubhagya) and a long life for men. Widows no longer wear Sindur.

Hanuman once asked Sita why she always wears Sindur. She replied that she was doing this to ensure Rama’s long life. Hanuman rushed into town, bought lots of cinnabar, and coated himself with it.
