The original realm of the snakes. They were worshiped and fed by the people, in return they did not bite them.
The snakes in turn donated part of the food to Garuda so that he would not eat them.
Feeling strong, Kaliya one day ate Garuda’s share. A fight ensued, which Kaliya lost, she fled to the Yamuna, which was taboo for Garuda due to a curse from sage Saubhari.
In this safety Kaliya became cocky, poisoned everything and was driven back to Ramanaka by Krishna with the promise that Garuda would not cause any trouble to Kaliya and his family.
