Sampati

Brother of Jatayu – both were sons of Aruna.

They were very special birds, with an enormous wing span and the gift of being able to fly extremely high in the sky.

Once they wanted to compete and flew towards the sun. Sampati tried to hold back Jatayu, but the youthful recklessness made him not listen to his brother. Sampati quickly overtook Jatayu and protected him with his wings. Sampati’s wings burned, he fell to the ground.

Sampati could no longer hunt for food. He said, from now on he would live on dead animals. Jatayu vowed the same. Since then, the vultures have been living on dead animals.

The brothers gave Rama the essential clue to find Sita.
