Parikshit (Mahabharata)

The only heir to the throne of the Pandavas after the Mahabharata war, King of Hastinapura. Son of Abhimanyu and Uttará, daughter of King Virata and sister of Prince Uttara.

Parikshit married Iravati, the daughter of Prince Uttara. They had four sons, Janamejaya, Srutasena, Bhimasena, Ugrasena.

When the war was over, the third world age, the Dvapara Yuga, also came to an end. The worst of the four ages, the Kali Yuga, began. Kali also took possession of Parikshit. He hung a snake around the neck of sage Shamika, who was in deep meditation, because he ignored him. The sage’s son, Sringan, curses Parikshit for dying from a snakebite in seven days. So it happened.

Parikshit’s successor was his son, Janamejaya. During the seven days that Parikshit was waiting for his death, he heard the Bhagavata Purana, also called Bhagavatam.
