Bála is the child, the youth – Balakrishna is Krishna during his youth in Mathura/Vrindavan.
Also Ganesha is called Balaganapati, where Ganapati means the same as Ganesha.
Bala means strength, courage. Balarama, the brother of Krishna, is the strong/courageous Rama.
