A sage who appears in the Puranas and Mahabharata.
Once he went to Dhritarashtra and spoke to him about the situation of the Pandavas, their exile and the return of their kingdom. Duryodhana displeased this and he compromised the sage. He then cursed Duryodhana that in the war Bhima would smash his thighs and he would die. His relationship will be wiped out. So it happened.
Maitreya met Vyasa in Varanasi, but did not realize who he was. Maitreya fed him, thereupon Vyasa revealed himself and spoke about giving food as the highest virtue, as this preserves the gross body and thereby the subtle body can work. The gift to Vyasa is known as Maitreya Biksha.
