Ramayana

The Ramayana, written by Valmiki describes the life journey of Rama, who lost the throne through intrigue and had to spend fourteen years in exile. During this time, he destroyed the demon Ravana, who had previously abducted Sita, his wife. Vishnu incarnated as Rama to free the earth from this demon.

Around the core narrative there are countless stories, parables, wisdom written. That makes the work so long (24,000 verses), and it is also written in a flowery, expansive, epic language.

The genre of the two epics – Ramayana and Mahabharata – is called Itihasa.
