Daughter of king Subala of Gandhara. Mother of the 100 Kauravas. Married with Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika and Vyasa. Since Ambika closed her eyes at the sight of Vyasa, Dhritarashtra was born blind.

In order to share the fate with her husband, she blindfolded her eyes forever. In addition to their 100 sons, the couple had a daughter, Dushala. A son, Yuyutsu, Dhritarashtra fathered with Gandhari’s maid.
