Demon, King of Lanka, devotee of Shiva, opponent of Rama in the Ramayana. His original name was Dashamukha, the ten-headed. Once he wanted to raise mount Kailash. Shiva trapped him. He screamed in pain and was henceforth called Ravana, the screaming one.
In the Adbhuta Ramayana he has a brother with thousand heads, Sahasramukha.
Ravana’s grandfather was sage Pulastya, a mind-born son of Brahma.

In the Ramcharitmanas they are the reborn King Pratapbhanu and his brother Arimardan.
The maternal line
Suketu, had three sons, Malyavan, Mali, Sumali, and a daughter, Tataka.
Tataka married Sunda, their sons were Maricha and Subahu, their daughter was Kaikesi, mother of Ravana.
